This course is helpful due to the population of children that I work with. I work at a school for children with learning differences and sometimes refer students for vision evaluations and/or OT evaluations based on weaknesses that are noted. This gives me more information so that I can better explain to parents why I am suspecting vision difficulties that are not necessarily related to 20/20 vision.

The course provided valuable information & expanded what should explore or consider for my students. One particular student left us perplexed about his struggles and he also has ADHD, I extended my SLP eval and screened his hearing. I now want to go back & look at his WISC VSI scores.

Dr. Hellerstein was an excellent speaker. I enjoyed and appreciated her use of videos and "interactive" activities. As an SLP, I do believe that SLP students {and early childhood education students) should get at least an introductory course on vision and its effects on learning. We did screen (SLPs) preschool and kindergarten students. I could catch the "squinters" and those that did not pass the screening, but I am sure I missed some with other vision problems.

I appreciated the definitions of terms associated with strabismus as well as highlighting the signs of what to look for in trouble to determine if there is a vision deficit. One thing that stood out was a child reading at a fourth grade level but chooses 2nd grade level books due to the larger print.

I have been wondering what was missing for my students. The team of SLPs, OTs, PTs, and Special Educators work so hard to help the students become better academically but we are missing the visual componement. I am very excited to get to work on Monday and start collaborating on how we can create a more supportive and cohesive team. Time to find a Vision Therapist.
