I loved how the presenter was so cognizant and expressive about where and how to meet the individual in understanding, such as not using the word "stimming" because the behaviors kids are engaging in are developmentally appropriate for where they are at. It's our job to recognize that and support them where they are at, rather than have our own agenda or curriculum. The work is in the humanity and personally connected interactions. Thank you!

Thank you for such clear examples of how to alter our approach with preverbal children. I also appreciate the suggestion of use "conventional" and "unconventional" rather than "appropriate" and "inappropriate"; this will impact my communication with caregivers/families and hopeful make communication more empathetic

As a parent to a young child with ASD, as well as a clinician, I appreciated her viewpoint and guidance on language to use when referring to the child's behaviors/actions. I think she provided respectful and beneficial alternatives for therapists and parents to utilize instead. Additionally, I liked the examples she described for various things throughout the lecture.

This course provides great examples of intervention strategies for preverbal children. I love the emphasis on encouraging reciprocity in communication with the child at their level within activities that are motivating to them to support an increase in initiation of interactions. The explanations of what to expect from children in each of these stages regardless of their age (ex. need for a rest/break period after engaging in an activity) were also informative.

Very little information for elementary age child with these needs. I am always looking for more information re: joint attention, understanding gestures, following a point, and using knowledge of sensory processing, developmental order and play to support language, I don’t often find it in one place in a manner that is research based and easy explain to others. Presenter has thorough knowledge of the material, presents it clearly, for the most part, and completely, although she skipped some good information about therapy strategies because she ran out of time. There were times she took extra time to express her concerns about therapy practices that she considered unhelpful. For the most part this seemed valid and important to include. But at times maybe took too long over this and then ran out of time.
