As an SLP, children with DS is not a population with whom I have had the pleasure of working. I recently have become a granny to a sweet boy who happens to have DS. So I am learning all I can to be able to support him and his mom and dad the very best that I can as a grandma and an SLP.

I wished I had of learned more of these things in graduate school, and I believe there was critical information in this session that all SLPs should know when working with individuals with down syndrome. Very interesting overview of Down's Syndrome. I don't think I knew about a lot of the characteristics that are typical of individuals with this disability, yet there is a high population of these students at my school. A lot of details were validated for me, while others, I learned for maybe the first time. Very informative.

Higher incidence rate for fluency disorders of stuttering and cluttering. Parent and teacher dissatisfaction with speech therapy results in regard to the "ceiling out" attitude. Progresses can still be made with more examples and practices of skills. Don't forget to keep a check on hearing status, secondary otitis media is very common with this population.

Presenting detailed background information about the condition was helpful. The discussion about the functional and structural issues that affect speech in people with DS was useful. Learning the high rate of fluency disorders among individuals with DS in comparison to the general population was surprising. Incorporating the use of video clips to illustrate concepts and techniques was enjoyable. Imparting knowledge about the best strategies for teaching this population was informative.
