As a parent of a young adult with anxiety, I wish I had had this training when he was in middle and high school. The practical strategies for parents and schools/professionals are great. The benefits of mindfulness training is something that I have integrated into our higher ed events for Undergrads and Grads as well as faculty/staff.

I have suffered from anxiety my entire life. I still managed to excel academically. I have a son that is also anxious that struggled. I can see that I tried to help him by letting him avoid certain situations. I see that this did not help him long term.

Very relatable with mental health being on the rise across adolescent population - mention of selective mutism as well as avoidance etc. and how sometime parents try to be helpful but it can hinder success was also eye-opening as a school SLP.

I found this VERY helpful for me and for my son. He is 22 and has ADHD and ASD (very high functioning). He stopped going to school (college) and since I was at work, I had no idea. He ended up failing his classes. I think my pushiing him (and my own anxiety) made the problem worse. He and I try to talk 1x/week about "DEEP" thoughts and I think that tonight's "TALK-O Tuesday" will be about anxiety and avoidance.

The presenter was very professional and seems knowledgeable and experienced. However, I thought the views presented were very narrow. I was hoping for more information about anxiety and the mitigation of it related to learning new skills and less about how to keep a child in the school building. As an SLP and a homeschool parent, this information did not seem particularly helpful, and there were several things that I didn’t agree with from a parenting perspective.

The instructor has some good strategies to share with school-based professionals, but the course encourages professionals to go outside of their scope and perform extremely high-risk psychological interventions without the consent of the child receiving them (and consent/assent is essential in any exposure-based intervention). The comment about refusing AAC for selective mutism contradicts all evidence on the topic & implies speech is more important than curriculum access/ relationships/ safety.

This presentation really highlights the SLP role in Anxiety/Selective Mutism in the schools. Anxiety is very real, and SM - although based in anxiety, has effects on communication - which the SLP has expert knowledge in. SLP working hand-in-hand with mental health professionals in/out of schools can be key to supporting students with SM within in the school buildings.

This course was fantastic and I'd highly recommend for anyone who works in schools including teachers, SLPs, OTs, SW, principals, etc. I'd also recommend for parents. As an SLP who works with children with language and/or reading impairments, anxiety plays such a huge role and much of the work to help address it in the child is actually with the parents. There were useful strategies as well as outcomes that show the bigger picture of not dealing with anxiety. Thank you for this course!
