>> Amy Hansen: Good afternoon and welcome to our last presentation in this week's virtual conference on Augmentative and Alternative Communication. We are very pleased to have Filip Loncke joining us this week as our guest editor for this conference. Today's expert seminar is entitled, "AAC Funding and Report Writing for Special Education" presented by Lewis Golinker.
At this time, I am pleased to introduce Filip Loncke one more time this week.

>> Filip Loncke: Good morning, everybody, or good afternoon, everybody, depending on where you are. I have enjoyed so much this entire week of webinars that we have had with SpeechPathlogy.com. It has been really great. If there is one person that has learned a lot, it is certainly me. I have enjoyed every single speaker this week and I especially enjoyed Lewis Golinker's presentation yesterday. I thought every minute was a minute well spent listening to Lew. I am looking forward, as all of you, to today's presentation when he will talk about school funding or educational funding. So let me say a few words about Lewis. He's an attorney with 29 years of experience in expanding access to funding for speech generating devices and currently serves as the Advocacy Director of the United States for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, USSAAC. In the U.S. he has worked to ensure SGD funding through Medicaid programs throughout the country, Medicare, Tricare and insurers. Also has worked to establish funding for SGDs British Columbia and in Alberta in Canada. He's responsible for the information posted at the very valuable website that I refer my students to it all the time and I use it myself all the time: www.aacfundinghelp.com and the information related to funding on the AAC RERC website. Without much more further ado, please take the floor and tell us everything that we need to know.

[Applause]

>> Lewis Golinker: Thank you, Filip, Amy.

This session will review the standards to be applied by speech pathologists and other school staff when a student with a very severe speech language impairment is identified and referred for evaluation and then as the student's IEP is developed. Specifically, we will discuss the discussion making process related to a student who can't now and won't be able to communicate effectively by speech and who should be recommended for a speech generating device; how the speech pathologist and IEP team should select the SGDs; and how to decide the services to receive the support given to the student for the SGD. We will review who can pay for an SGD and recommend it for a student in the public schools.
