Outcomes of Children Prenatally Exposed to Drugs: Implications for Intervention

Course: #5837Level: Intermediate 1 Hour 38 Reviews

Approximately 10% of all infants born are prenatally exposed to drugs. Prenatal exposure has the potential to contribute to or cause a wide variety of physical, emotional, and developmental problems. The damage experienced by the unborn fetus can be long-lasting and children prenatally exposed must receive the appropriate intervention in order to grow and develop optimally. Professionals must be educated and aware of the various outcomes associated with the most often abused substances and use the information to provide the best services to this population. This course will provide an overview of four of the major drugs unborn infants are exposed to in utero, and will discuss timely research findings relating to outcomes associated with the exposure, how the problems impact the child’s ability to function in school and society, and implications for SLP intervention.
