LENA Foundation Optimizes Treatment of Language Delays and Disorders
LENA Foundation is the creator of the LENA System. A groundbreaking technology, LENA (for “language environment analysis”) is advanced technology for the early screening, diagnosis, research, and treatment of language delays and disorders in children and adults.
Since 2004, the foundation's team of world-class scientists – who are highly skilled in computerized speech and speaker recognition, microelectronics, statistical research, and children’s language acquisition and development – have worked continuously to create and fine-tune the system.
The system is easy to use and informative. A parent activates the unobtrusive LENA Digital Language Processor (DLP) and places it in the pocket of LENA Clothing on the child. After recording a minimum of 10 hours of a child’s language environment, the DLP is plugged into a PC. Sophisticated language environment analysis software automatically uploads and processes the audio file, generating six reports and two assessments. Reports and assessments that would normally take speech language professionals hours of extra work to produce are generated automatically, freeing up the workday for focusing on more one-on-one work with children.
The six reports include Adult Words, Conversational Turns, Child Vocalizations, Audio Environment, TV and Electronic Sounds, and Composite View. You can view each report in monthly, daily, hourly or 5-minute timeframes. The two assessments correlate well with standard language assessments. One, the LENA Automatic Vocalization Assessment (AVA™), is a measure of expressive language based on the child’s vocalization behavior on a single day. The other, the LENA Developmental Snapshot™, is a total language score encompassing both expressive and receptive language; it is representative of a child’s day-to-day observed language skills and behaviors. For example, a parent answers “yes” on the questionnaire if the child has demonstrated a skill consistently.
What's more, the LENA Pro system features the LENA Advanced Data Extraction (ADEX) Tool™, which offers an extensive list of data mining options that enable you to drill down quickly and easily into a wealth of information. You can examine count and duration data and even use the duration data to distinguish between Male Adult Words and Female Adult Words. You may also use ADEX to access Developmental Snapshot information and conduct even more in-depth analysis.
You can use the LENA System to help children with language delay and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as well as children who are deaf or hard of hearing or struggling with language development or transitioning after an international adoption.

The foundation also offers data collection and research design services.
LENA Foundation Findings
LENA Foundation is committed to only creating products that are scientifically proven to improve the parent-child bond and enhance child development. Hence, the foundation's scientists are not only devoted to continually upgrading our product line, but also using LENA technology to conduct groundbreaking research of its own.
Through its own longitudinal studies, the foundation has been able to:
- Calculate percentile norms for daily adult word counts, conversational turns, and child vocalizations
- Show the impact of gender and birth order on how much adults talk with different children
- Discover that parents tend to overestimate the amount they talk with children and that feedback from LENA helps increase talk
- Learn that parents talk most in the late afternoon and early evening
- Discern a connection between high TV exposure rates and low language abilities
In 2009, SpeechPathology.com will host educational product presentations on the LENA System, offering more information on how you can use the technology to optimize treatment and drive your studies and career to new heights.
