Matching Goals to Grade-level Standards

Question

I have students that may be in third grade, but they haven't yet mastered first grade speaking objectives.  How do I match my goals to grade level standards in those cases? 

Answer

I suggest reviewing the first-grade Common Core State Standards and third-grade Common Core State Standards. Find commonalities between the first grade and the third grade.  That will help you write goals in such a way that you are targeting the third grade state standards, but doing it on a much lower level.  Then you are going to determine how to build a hierarchy of skills from the first grade state standards to eventually bring the child up to third grade where they need to be.
