April is National Autism Awareness Month. The latest research from the Center of Disease Control indicates a possible increase in autism prevalence rates from 1 in 88 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to 1 in 50 (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nhsr/nhsr065.pdf). Additionally, major changes to the definition of autism have been approved for the DSM-V (https://www.autism-society.org/news/autism-society-responds-to-3.html). These factors demonstrate that now, more than ever, it is imperative that SLPs continue to provide appropriate services, education and support to individuals with ASD and their families.
