This course discusses the syntactical complexities of written language and reasons why adolescents struggle with writing. It further identifies the characteristics of adolescents who are struggling with syntactic demands of writing, and provides ideas for therapeutic practices/activities to target these specific difficulties.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. This course will review the science of decision-making and how factors such as bias, cognitive dissonance, willful blindness, and “group think” may have an adverse influence on our ability to make thoughtful, well-informed decisions, including ethical decisions. Strategies that can minimize the influence of these factors and create more positive, achievable outcomes will be discussed.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. In this course, practical guidelines will be reviewed related to incorporating animal-assisted therapy into clinical practice. This overview will include information regarding training requirements for animal-handler teams, benefits/challenges of the SLP acting as a handler, and clinical decision-making, including goal-setting, when incorporating animals into speech-language pathology clinical care.

This course will present research regarding the current assessment practices of school-based speech-language pathologists, as well as providing evidence-based recommendations for optimizing assessment. In addition, the complexities of child language diagnoses will be discussed.

This is Part 2 of a two-part series. This course will examine evidence-based best practices and considerations for doing aural rehabilitation with adults with cochlear implants, and will include a discussion of therapy goals and target selection.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Adults receiving cochlear implants require aural rehabilitation, though it is not always recommended as frequently as it is for children. This course will examine areas of concern and indications for aural rehabilitation for adults, and will discuss the assessment process for adults.

The number of individuals who communicate in languages and dialects that differ from Standard American English (SAE) continues to grow in the U.S., yet the vast majority of SLPs are monolingual speakers of SAE. This course will introduce participants to evidence-based strategies and methods for planning and implementing assessments for multilinguals who do not speak the same language(s) as the evaluating SLP. It will also discuss resources for determining difference versus disorders in these individuals.

This course will address a tested, replicated method for working with parents to improve narration in children who are struggling, and will describe the narrative traditions and values of diverse cultures. This course is presented in partnership with the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders (ABCLLD).

This is Part 2 of the five-part series, Personal Narratives Across Diverse Cultures. Our knowledge about developmental language disorders is predominantly underpinned by positivist paradigms, and remarkably little is known about children’s experiences from their own perspectives. This course will explore how identity construction and well-being can be investigated in children with developmental language disorder using a qualitative methodology called narrative inquiry. By listening to children’s experiences through their stories, SLPs can learn about ways in which they can be supported across the lifespan. This course is presented in partnership with the American Board of Child Language and Language Disorders (ABCLLD).
