Language sample analysis (LSA) is a powerful clinical tool — but for many SLPs, applying it with adolescents can feel daunting. This course tackles the most common barriers head-on, from selecting age-appropriate sampling tasks and understanding what linguistic complexity looks like beyond early childhood, to identifying key grammatical targets and working within the time constraints of real-world practice. Participants will learn when, why, and how to implement LSA most effectively and efficiently with adolescent clients. Case studies featuring adolescents with language disorders, as well as those with typical language development, are used throughout to illustrate practical application and support confident clinical decision-making.

Marilyn Nippold
Marilyn A. Nippold, PhD, CCC-SLP is a Professor Emeritus in Communication Disorders and Sciences at the University of Oregon where she taught for 42 years (1982-2024). A licensed speech-language pathologist, she earned her bachelorʼs degree in philosophy from the University of California at Los Angeles, her masterʼs degree in communicative disorders from California State University at Long Beach, and her doctorate in speech–language pathology from Purdue University. A former public school speech–language pathologist who worked in California, her research since 1980 has emphasized later language development, language disorders, language sampling, critical thinking, and stuttering. Dr. Nippold has published numerous books, journal articles, and chapters, and is a frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences. She served as Editor of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (2010-2015), is a Fellow of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association (ASHA), a Board Certified Specialist in Child Language, and received the Editorʼs Award for articles published in ASHA journals in 1983 and 2001. In 2015, she received Honors of the Association, ASHAʼs highest award for distinguished contributions to the profession of communication sciences and disorders.
