I've already shared my praise of this course in review of part 1, but I really appreciate the topic in general; it's an area where we should definitely be providing services in more frequently but that most people are uncomfortable with. The presentation and information shared helps ease that discomfort and helps us to see the benefit.

This is new territory for SLP's. The presentation was a much-needed addition to the skills that practitioners in medical settings can add to their toolbox with further study, of course. I very much appreciated the topic of The Good Death. Intuitively I acknowledged the existence of this concept and it was very gratifying to see that it is actually a construct which was clearly outlined by the presenter and can be employed in our professional settings.

The course and presentation were exceptional. I do believe the Speech-Language Pathologist has an important communicative and counseling role to play in helping achieve the Good Death, besides focusing on eating and swallowing. Each of the quotes resonated with me, and appreciate the references. However, I do feel the questions on the exam were misleading and lead to selecting the wrong answers...which I will explain further below.

Shedding light on a subject we encounter often but don't typically receive training on - I like how the instructor related the material/information to the SLP's scope of practice. This is the kind of knowledge that separates good therapists who "do their jobs" and the really great ones who go above and beyond and make lasting impressions and do the most good for their patients and families.

There is a very strong resistance, and not just among SLPs, but medical practitioners in general, to admit that part of caring for our patients goes beyond "what's wrong with them" but also how they're dealing with it. All medical professionals need to pay attention to the emotional/psychological aspects of their patients and that often includes the religious and/or spiritual beliefs of said patients. Just being there, listening, and supporting the emotional needs and need to be listened to of dying patients should be considered the part of any professional's role when serving this demographic.

The course laid out the importance for the professional and lay community to accelerate its open dialogue regarding death and dying, as the United States has a largely “death-phobic” culture. If, as a society, we begin to address the question of how people want to die and what they actually need and want at the end of their lives, perhaps we can enable more people to obtain a good death, reaching their full potential, with dignity and whole-person well-being.
