The Effect of Cultural Influences upon Classroom Behavior

Differentiating language differences from language disorders is one of the biggest challenges facing the public school speech pathologist and his/her team. This presentation will discuss the ten cross- cultural continuums (Callis-Buckley) as they apply to our observations of behavior in the mainstream U.S. classroom. The presenter will include examples from real life assignments in the public school setting.

Learning Outcomes

  • checkmarkThe participant will be able to state the 10 cultural continuums (Callis-Buckley) which can guide observations of student behavior in the public school setting.
  • checkmarkThe participant will be able to provide at least two examples of cross-cultural influences upon student behaviors in the public school for each of the cultural continuums presented.
  • checkmarkThe participant will be able to provide at least one example of cross-cultural influence from the home/parent which can affect student behavior in the public school setting for each of the cultural continuums presented.
  • checkmarkThe participant will be able to describe at least one method which can be used to lessen cultural influence upon behaviors observed in the public school for each of the cultural continuums presented.
