This course explains the history of education standards and details the language and communication expectations of standards. Ideas for SLPs’ use of the standards for evaluation, eligibility determination and planning are provided.

Lissa Power-deFur, PhD, CCC-SLP
Lissa Power-deFur has focused on education standards since working at the Virginia Department of Education during the establishment of Virginia’s standards. She is a regular presenter on this topic and authored a book on Common Core State Standards and the SLP. She serves as graduate program director at Longwood University, where she was instrumental in starting the graduate program and the multi-faceted community clinic. She has been an active volunteer for the professions, serving on the Boards of the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Virginia and ASHA. She earned her masters’ and doctoral degrees at the University of Virginia and lives in Richmond, VA.
