Based on the textbook Here’s How to Treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS): Third Edition, this course discusses the most current research regarding the nature of CAS, best practices in evaluation, and effective treatment approaches, along with considerations related to motor learning and co-occurring challenges. It provides a holistic overview of the complex needs of children with CAS at various stages of development.

This is Part 3 of a four-part series. Current research related to the importance of phonological awareness to literacy skill development is discussed in this course. Evidence-based, multi-modal strategies for improving pivotal phonological awareness skills, while maintaining focus on the child’s individualized therapy goals, are described.

The importance of assessment and intervention targeting morphology and syntax and the subsequent impact on student literacy outcomes are discussed in this course. Assessment tools and treatment activities that address these areas, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity considerations, are described.

This is Part 1 of a two-part series. A thorough voice evaluation is the first step toward helping patients improve their vocal function. The role of ENT vs. SLP, evaluation components, and both objective and subjective aspects of assessment are described. Discussion includes: gathering a detailed voice-specific history and determining possible contribution of lifestyle factors; perceptual observations; and diagnostic therapy techniques.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series. The reasons that print knowledge matters and ways that SLPs can improve it are discussed in this course. Components of print knowledge, challenges with print knowledge and their prevalence in autism, and evidence-based, multi-modal print referencing strategies for immediate use in clinical practice are addressed.

Impairments of reading (alexia) and writing (agraphia) are commonly associated with left hemisphere stroke or progressive cortical atrophy, but not all acquired impairments of written language are the same. The underlying cognitive and neural supports for reading and spelling, as well as behavioral characteristics associated with central and peripheral alexia and agraphia profiles, are discussed in this course.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD),as well as a related theoretical framework and cultural considerations are discussed in this course. Populations likely to suffer from PTSD, cognitive-communication changes associated with PTSD and their impact on diagnosis and treatment are also described, and case examples are presented.

Polyvagal Theory, its evidence base, and its implications for clinical practice - including the provision of trauma-informed care - are discussed in this course. Different responses of the autonomic nervous system and how it can be used to engage the body’s relaxation response are described.

This is Part 2 in a three-part series on private practice. The critical elements of a foundational framework for establishing and growing a successful speech-language pathology private practice, along with examples of how SLPs can apply these to reach their own business goals, are presented in this course. Discussion also includes various service delivery models and methods for identifying potential target customers.
