This is Part 1 of a two-part series. Functional and standardized assessment of brain injury across settings are discussed in this course. Symptom identification, informal observational assessment, and challenges associated with using formal assessment in patients who have sustained head trauma are described.

An overview of environmental modifications that support speech-language pathology participation and therapeutic outcomes for people with low vision is provided in this course. Supports and barriers that affect communication are described, and the integration of assessment results and home and clinic interventions - including lighting, contrast, and technology adaptations - are discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemic augmented both the challenges and awareness of social isolation and loneliness for healthcare professionals, families, & at-risk individuals. This course differentiates social isolation and loneliness, describes risk factors and signs of these conditions, and identifies effective ways to reduce their occurrence while promoting improved mental and physical health outcomes for clients and professionals.

Incorporation of sensory strategies into pediatric practice, to improve emotional management and self-regulation and prevent sensory processing-related meltdowns, is described in this course. Effective integration of top-down (cognitive) and bottom-up (sensory) approaches is demonstrated via case studies. Outcomes measurement and collaboration with teachers and parents to implement strategies are also addressed.

This course addresses the importance and methodology of writing goals that are family-centered in order to improve the outcomes of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The addition of Caregiver Education to the 2024 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes is also discussed.

An overview of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI)/concussion and its pathophysiology, with particular emphasis on diagnostic and rehabilitation tools utilized by SLPs and audiologists, is provided in this course. Impacts of mTBI on hearing, cognition, vision and the vestibular system, assessments performed by the two disciplines post-concussion, and treatments for cognition (including auditory processing disorder) are described.

This is Part 1 of a 2-part series. Chronic cough affects millions of people per year, and SLPs can be an integral part of evaluation and management of this disorder. Characteristics of chronic cough and its impact on quality of life are discussed in this course. In addition, SLP evaluation of chronic cough to identify candidates for voice therapy management is described in the context of medical evaluation and management.

An overview for healthcare professionals about Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders is provided in this course. Characteristics of the dementias, such as symptoms, progression, and how they are diagnosed, are described. Care planning strategies for improving communication with patients and families, understanding and managing behavioral challenges, and promoting independence are also discussed.

Based on the textbook Medical Speech-Language Pathology Across the Care Continuum, this course explores medical SLP across settings (including acute care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing, outpatient, home health and pediatrics), and collaborators, workflows, and diagnosis and treatment principles for each. Neuroimaging, pharmacology, and lab tests are discussed, and case studies demonstrate application of concepts across the care continuum.

Developmental trauma and its overlapping and differentiating diagnostic criteria are described in this course. A profile that helps identify dysregulated behaviors and select appropriate strategies is shared. Suggestions for training families, educators, and other professionals are also provided.
