Articulation, Phonology, And Speech Sound Disorders CEU Courses for SLPs

This is Part 2 of a four-part series. It’s estimated that 25-30% of children with autism will never develop fluent speech. This course describes speech development, neurological issue that can interfere with it, and research-based strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve speech outcomes for clients on the autism spectrum.

By age 5, most children worldwide have acquired most consonants, vowels (and tones), and are intelligible. Respectful assessments that analyze children’s speech in all their home languages, and consider standard and dialect forms relevant to the child’s family, are described in this course. Free, evidence-based resources to support SLPs working with monolingual and multilingual children are also shared.

Implementation of a Cycles pattern-oriented approach for multilingual children with highly unintelligible speech is described in this course. Topics include: speech-sound intervention practices for Spanish-English speakers and speakers of other languages, including recommendations for monolingual clinicians; target selection; and strategies for working with families.

This is Part 2 of a four-part series. The reasons that print knowledge matters and ways that SLPs can improve it are discussed in this course. Components of print knowledge, challenges with print knowledge and their prevalence in autism, and evidence-based, multi-modal print referencing strategies for immediate use in clinical practice are addressed.

Use of the Comprehensive Assessment of Articulation and Intelligibility (CAAI) to conduct culturally-responsive, systematic and comprehensive assessment of foreign-accented speech is addressed in this course. Discussion includes procedures for analyzing 22 areas of speech and language, computing and interpreting scores, and using the results to formulate meaningful goals, plan treatment and evaluate outcomes.

The Comprehensive Assessment of Articulation and Intelligibility (CAAI), a research-based, data-driven approach to accent management, and its use in screening, assessment, goal setting, and progress monitoring are described in this course. The need for cultural responsiveness, bias awareness and adherence to principles of anti-racist communication when providing these services is also discussed.

An overview of motor learning principles relevant to speech sound disorders, including principles related to structuring practice conditions and feedback, is provided in this course. Evidence from the literature is presented, and specific ways to incorporate these principles into both acquisition and retention phases of intervention are described.

Yoga isn't just for adults in the studio! What yoga for children entails, and how and why to incorporate it into speech therapy, are described in this course. Discussion includes the ways in which yoga can help children feel more connected to their goals and work, find calm in the sessions, and have a more holistic and mindful experience.

Differentiating obligatory distortions from compensatory productions, sensory feedback techniques, and effective placement strategies for correction of speech sound errors (e.g., lateral lisp and distortion of /ɚ/ and /r/) are described in this course. Motor learning and motor memory principles are discussed as a framework for achieving carryover after sound acquisition has occurred.

Many speech-language pathology clinicians find speech science daunting and not applicable to their clinical practice. This course discusses why and how speech science is useful in understanding speech disorders and differences. Examples are provided of how to assess and treat speech disorders using speech science-based principles and techniques such as the source-filter theory and acoustic, physiologic and biofeedback measures.
