Personal Teaching Philosophy

Treat your students as the colleagues they will soon become. Prepare them as if you know they will someday treat your sister…or father…or daughter…or spouse…. You will know they are in the best of hands!

Research/Areas Interests

Early language and literacy, parent training, treatment efficacy, the interaction between the development of phonology and language.

Classes Taught

Undergraduate Level:  Clinical Phonology, Language Development. Organization and Administration of School Speech and Language Programs, Treatment of Language Disorders in the Classroom (to special education majors).

Graduate Level:  Pediatric Language Disorders; Articulation and Phonological Disorders; Counseling in Communicative Disorders; Research Methods, Advanced Clinical Practicum, Diagnostic Methods, Diagnostic Clinic.

Favorite Textbooks

I really like Making a Difference for America's Children by Barbara Moore-Brown and Judy Montgomery. It is full of information and advice that is practical, critical, and current. I think it should be in the hands of all prospective school-based SLPs. I also like Introduction to Clinical Phonology by Larry Small. It provides a lot of hands-on practice and is well organized. I also think is strikes just the right balance in terms of presenting enough information for an introductory course without overwhelming students with advanced material that will come in later courses.

University

Program Philosophy/Mission

Ours is a clinically oriented training program during which we provide academic and clinical training for all settings in which Speech-Language Pathologists practice, which range from preschools and elementary through secondary schools to hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing facilities.

Program Description

Our program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association graduates also meet licensure requirements in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as other states. Most of our graduates also choose to meet the requirements of the Pennsylvania Department of Education for certification to provide speech-language pathology services in the schools.

We admit a cohort of 18-22 full time graduate students each Fall semester. Our master's curriculum comprises 48-51 credits. Our students spend their first full year (Fall through Summer) taking classes and beginning their clinical experiences in the on campus Speech and Hearing Clinic. The second year (Fall and Spring semesters) is spent mostly at off campus practicum sites, returning to campus once per week to complete one class (such as a seminar). A master's thesis is optional, depending on each student's career goals.

We have a large network of school, hospital, rehabilitation, and community agency placements, allowing our students to tailor their clinical experiences to their anticipated career path. For more than a decade, the employment rate for our master's graduates has been 100%!

Faculty-Research

My research centers around intervention related to language and literacy. Others in the department specialize in research related to voice (Lori Lombard), and adult language (David Stein). Glen Tellis, a colleague, has recently moved to begin a program in a nearby university and is well-known for his work in stuttering and our newest colleague is Cynthia Richburg, an audiologist.

Grants and Projects

Many and varied. Current projects include the use of technology in clinical and classroom teaching, diversity issues, parent training, and hearing conservation. Our faculty is active in authoring chapters and textbooks for university students.
