Personal Teaching Philosophy

Universities and schools are recognizing that for success, now and in the future, we need to be comfortable and fluent in both L1 and L2.   Gone are the days when English was emphasized and the first language was placed in the background.   Four generations ago, being “American” meant dropping your native language (Italian, German, Polish, Chinese, etc.) and learning only English.  Within two or three generations, the native language was lost to that family.  Now, in the 21st Century, with international businesses negotiating million dollar deals in a fraction of a second over the Internet, it is more important than ever that the term bilingualism be defined correctly.  A truly bilingual person can communicate, think, and perform well in two or more languages.  When we, the educators, prepare our students to function in a 21st Century bilingual world, we are giving them a gift for their lifetime.
