In the Spotlight - Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Indiana, Pennsylvania

Individual Faculty Member

Faculty Spotlight:  Lori Lombard, Ph.D.

Dr. Lombard received her Ph.D. in 1996 from Penn State University. Her specialty areas are voice disorders and head & neck cancer rehabilitation. Upon receiving her doctorate, she began working for the University of Pittsburgh Voice Center (UPVC) as an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology. In 2002, she joined the speech-language pathology faculty at Indiana University of Pennsylvania while continuing as a clinical consultant at the UPVC. She has served on the steering committee for Special Interest Division 3 - Voice for the past 3 years.

Personal Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to provide a strong theoretical and basic science background to undergraduate students so that they are better prepared to develop and apply the clinical knowledge they receive at the graduate level. Strong clinicians need the critical thinking skills to continuously develop their skills.

Research/Areas Interests

My areas of interest are evaluation and treatment of voice disorders. In particular, I enjoy working with patients who have hypofunctional voice disorders such as vocal fold paralysis or atrophy. I also enjoy rehabilitation approaches in the head and neck cancer population, particularly tracheoesophageal voice restoration.

Classes Taught

At the undergraduate level, I teach courses in anatomy & physiology, speech science, and clinical methods. At the graduate level, I teach courses in voice disorders, head & neck cancer rehabilitation, cleft palate, and diagnostic methods.

Program Philosophy/Mission

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is the largest university in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. It is located 40 miles northeast of Pittsburgh in the town of Indiana. The speech-language pathology program is in the College of Education and the Department of Special Education and Clinical Services. Other programs in the department include special education, education of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and disability services. The eclectic program cluster fosters an interdisciplinary relationship that strengthens the foundation of our programs. We offer students the opportunity to develop an undergraduate curriculum with access to course offerings from any of our programs.

Program Description

The speech-language pathology program offers both a Bachelor's and Master's degrees. The program and clinic was re-accredited by ASHA in 2005. The program was also recently accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Our undergraduate class size is typically around 30 students and the graduate program is limited to 18 students to maintain the integrity of education and clinical experiences. We have an on-campus clinic for both undergraduate and graduate students to earn early clinical experiences. Our graduate students then complete two full time externships in each of a medical and education setting.

Faculty-Research

The speech-language pathology program currently has 5 full time faculty members and will be hiring two more faculty members this year. Each member of the faculty is active in their areas of interest and in leadership roles at the local, state, and national level. The faculty teaches courses in their area of expertise and also supervises in the campus clinic.

Grants and Projects

In 2004, the speech-language pathology program received a grant to implement a state-of-the-art technology center in the clinic. The clinic rooms are now equipped with digital recording monitors and equipment so that students and faculty may create digital video samples of their sessions for teaching and research.
