Course Abstract

The purpose of this course is to enhance participants’ knowledge in the area of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and aphasia with particular emphasis on recent advancements in this area. Topics include new technologies, generalization of AAC strategies, and interventions focused on AAC.

Sarah E. Wallace, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Duquesne University. She teaches courses on aphasia, cognitive-communication disorders, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Her current research interests include semantic treatments to improve word retrieval of people with aphasia as well as development of appropriate AAC strategies for people with aphasia and traumatic brain injury. She has a particular interest in methods to support navigation of high technology AAC devices and generalization of the use of AAC strategies.

  • After this course, participants will be able to describe 2 strategies for promoting AAC generalization.
  • After this course, participants will be able to describe the multimodal communication program for aphasia.
  • After this course, participants will be able to describe how some AAC strategies can be restorative in nature.

0-5 Minutes Introduction and background
5-15 Minutes Overview of specific & new AAC assessment strategies for people with aphasia.
15-35 Minutes Overview of specific & new AAC strategies and devices for people with aphasia
35-55 Minutes ntervention techniques for promoting generalization of AAC strategies.
55-60 Minutes Conclusion; Q&A
