Course Abstract

Thiscourse details a comprehensive treatment program for children who present Selective Mutism. It is dependent on a comprehensive evaluation that specifies the condition, its Associated Features, and Comorbid conditions. Correct management of the child who presents Selective Mutism in the classroom, revised management by parents, and play therapy are the three components of comprehensive treatment.

Robert C Thompson earned a Ph.D. in Communication Disorders at the University of Oklahoma and has been a professor at the University of Texas (Edinburg), University of Oklahoma, and Northeastern State University (Oklahoma).  He was director of speech-language-hearing for sixteen years at Tulsa Children’s Medical Center, a psychiatric and pediatric hospital.  Currently he is a consultant to Developmental Pediatrics, Hillcrest Medical Center (Tulsa) and to Pediatrics, W. W. Hastings Indian Hospital (Tahlequah) of the Cherokee Nation.

He has presented on Selective Mutism throughout the United States and for the national associations of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and at the 2004 Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics.

Course Objectives

  • After this course, participants will be able to describe how to counsel school staff on correct management of children who present Selective Mutism.
  • After this course, participants will be able to provide guidelines for parents on correct management of their child and methods to modify Associated Features and Comorbid conditions.
  • After this course, participants will be able to write a play therapy protocol that modifies associated features and comorbid conditions, and provides a setting for the child to verbalize in school.

5-15 Minutes Three treatment components of comprehensive management
15-40 Minutes Life adjustment counseling for parents, and informational counseling of school staff
40-55 Minutes Play therapy
55-60 Minutes Conclusion; Q&A
