This course provides SLPs with a template derived from Evidence-Based Practice tenets of Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome (PiCO) for forming clinical questions. The PICO template can serve as a guide for SLPs in their own decision-making when selecting an app for therapy. The PICO template will be demonstrated using 4 different scenarios to show the decision pathway for how an app can be selected for each clinical question. This course is a companion to Course #5059: “Selecting Apps for Therapy: A tutorial for SLPs using an EBP model to assist with choosing intervention tools.” These courses can be taken in any order.

Underlying principles of oropharyngeal exercise for dysphagia rehabilitation are presented in the context of understanding swallowing neurophysiology and plasticity as the building blocks for dining; that is, eating a meal. Dining will be discussed as an endurance activity focusing on its relationship to strength and fatigue. Interventions to promote successful and safe dining including guidance on incorporating both compensatory and active rehabilitation techniques to create optimal, functional treatment plans throughout the continuum of dysphagia care will be presented.
