The course will provide SLPs who work with individuals who have sustained TBI with detailed information regarding best practice for selecting test materials. Specific information about evaluation including normative data, target population, test description, scoring, time required for completion, what the test attempts to measure, challenges/constraints of the test, usefulness of the test and perhaps most importantly, communicating results to individuals tested will be reviewed.
Learning Outcomes
- After this course, participants will be able to describe six tests as recommended by Practice Guidelines for Standardized Assessment for Persons with Traumatic Brain Injury (Turkstra et al 2005) for use in evaluating individuals with TBI
- After this course, participants will be able to describe at least three inclusion criteria for determining tests that are recommended for usage with this population
- After this course, participants will be able to describe the speech-language pathologist’s unique contribution to the interdisciplinary evaluation process.
- After this course, participants will be able to describe WHY it is ESSENTIAL to provide a translation of test items’ importance in thinking/ communicating so that individuals may understand why the skill area is tested and why it is important
- After this course, participants will be able to list “translation” of test materials’ relevance to essential functional life skills for at least one test item in each test described.

Victoria (Tori) Harding provides specialized program and location development for NeuroRestorative and acts as the Clinical Projects Coordinator for Virginia NeuroCare, a Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) program in Charlottesville, Virginia. Tori's primary research and clinical interest areas include outcome measurements in post-acute settings, the self-efficacy mechanism in post-acute brain injury, neurogenic communication disorders and family training for long-term success and advocacy. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, she works as a clinician and an educator and as a Certified Brain Injury Trainer, she teaches through the Academy of Brain Injury Specialists. Currently a PhD candidate at James Madison University, Tori received her Master's degree of Business Administration at Plymouth State University and completed her Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada.
