Course Abstract

Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) apps for mobile devices are increasingly being considered for individuals with significant communication challenges due to congenital and acquired conditions (e.g., autism, aphasia, developmental disability, apraxia). This course discusses resources available to help clinicians identify AAC apps and make feature-based decisions.

The presenter gave a well-organized, interesting, and thorough overview of the variety of apps available, the importance of reviewing different aspects of apps, and the need to do AAC assessment of clients rather than just purchase an app that looks good. Carole Zangari, Ph.D.

Dr. Carole Zangari is a professor of Speech, Language, and Communication Disorders at Nova Southeastern University. She teaches master’s and doctoral classes on AAC, provides clinical supervision to graduate students working with clients who use AAC, and coordinates the AAC lab. Dr. Zangari is co-editor of Practically Speaking: Language, Literacy, and Academic Development of Students with AAC Needs and is a past coordinator of ASHA’s Special Interest Group in AAC.
