Various intraluminal and peristomal attachment options for Heat Moisture Exchange (HME) systems and/or hands-free devices are described in this course. Selection of the appropriate attachment and techniques for optimal placement/application of the attachment to achieve a good seal are addressed. Troubleshooting strategies for difficult stomal topography are also discussed.

Behaviors and developmental/educational impacts associated with auditory processing disorder (APD) are described in this course. Methods and tools for identifying APD, including a list of tests for assessment, as well as treatment strategies for APD are discussed.

SLPs sometimes struggle to find meaningful activities for patients with mild cognitive impairment, especially those who may be returning home. This Fast Class demonstrates examples of patient-centered, functional cognitive-linguistic goals and activities related to safety, numeric reasoning, problem solving and more, to support individuals with community reintegration.

This course discusses why it is important for SLPs to diagnose and intervene to help school-age children and adolescents who struggle with grammar and syntax. Information on the development of grammar and syntax, procedures for assessment, academic challenges for students with grammar/syntax impairments, and curriculum-based interventions are provided.

In the arena of learning and communication, anxiety has a significant impact, not only on performance, but also on memory, participation, and engagement. The influence of anxiety, components of the avoidance cycle, and accommodations and interventions school professionals can use to help students be successful are discussed in this course.

The role of the speech-language pathologist or other feeding specialist in promoting infant feeding efficiency for optimal growth and development is described in this course. Different types of clefts and their impact on newborn feeding and swallowing are discussed, along with components of the clinical feeding assessment and therapeutic interventions to facilitate feeding in infants with cleft lip/palate.

Due to speech-language pathologist shortages and more diverse caseloads, monolingual SLPs are increasingly being asked to serve multilingual pediatric populations. Practical resources for conducting a comprehensive evaluation and use of the resulting information to differentiate communication differences and disorders are described in this course. Common questions and challenges, such as use of interpreters, are also discussed.

Executive functioning skills of children preschool-aged through young adulthood are defined and their development and importance during the school years is described in this course. Strategies to target executive functioning skills from an interdisciplinary perspective are also discussed.

The definition of childhood trauma, the experiences that constitute trauma in a student’s life, and the concept of trauma-informed intervention are described in this course. Practical, hands-on suggestions are provided for strategies that support students with communication disorders who have experienced trauma, and activities to improve their social and executive function skills.

The literature on voice and communication therapy for the transgender community remains overly broad, with little to no research focusing on the bilingual transgender voice experience and clients' entire identity, including ethnicity. This course discusses vocal cultural characteristics and why they must be considered in order for SLPs to develop cultural competence and effectively work with the bilingual transgender population.
