SpeechPathology.com is, once again, honored to welcome Audrey Holland, Ph.D. as the Guest Editor of our second online Virtual Conference Series of 2013 - Cutting Edge Approaches to Aphasia Management.

Please join us June 10-14, 2013 for daily seminars focusing on specific aphasia intervention techniques to help SLPs stay up to date on the latest advances in clinical management.  Seminars will be conducted by leading experts: Elizabeth Hoover, M.S., CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS(A); Lynn Maher, Ph.D., CCC-SLP; Lisa Edmonds, Ph.D., CCC-SLP; Leora Cherney, Ph.D., BC-ANCDS; Jessica Richardson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP and H. Isabel Hubbard, M.S., CCC-SLP.

Each of these one (1) hour continuing education sessions will be presesnted daily from 12:00 to 1:00 PM ET and are offered for ASHA CEUs. Below is a list of topics to be included in this online virtual conference:

Monday, June 10 - Integrating the iPad® into a Comprehensive Aphasia Treatment Program
Presented by: Elizabeth Hoover, M.S., CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS(A), Boston University
This seminar will illustrate ways of incorporating the iPad into a comprehensive program for aphasia. We will highlight the use of apps in a review of an intensive, interdisciplinary treatment model; however, the approaches discussed will have broader applicability to other aphasia treatment settings.

Tuesday, June 11 - Deconstructing Constraint-Induced Language Therapy
Presented by: Lynn Maher, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, University of Houston
This course will provide a review of the available evidence for Constraint Induced Language Therapy (CILT), also referred to in the literature as Constraint Induced Aphasia Therapy. The theoretical underpinnings of this intervention, and the current thinking about the potential and the limitations of this type of intervention will be discussed.

Wednesday, June 12 - Clinical Implications of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment
Presented by: Lisa Edmonds, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, University of Florida
Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) is an aphasia treatment developed with the intent to promote lexical retrieval in single word and sentence contexts with the intent to generalize lexical retrieval improvements to discourse. This course will first briefly review the theoretical foundation and research findings related to VNeST. Then more detail will be given related to potential clinical applications with specific examples.

Thursday, June 13 - Aphasia Treatment: Is More Better?
Presented by: Leora Cherney, Ph.D., BC-ANCDS, Northwestern University; Rehab Institute of Chicago
Studies indicate that intensive speech-language therapy for persons with aphasia may be associated with significant improvement. However, there is no standard definition of intensity, and intensive treatment is difficult to provide in the current healthcare environment. In this presentation, dose parameters are defined and the current literature regarding intensity and aphasia treatment is summarized. Methods of increasing treatment intensity are suggested, including the independent use of computer-based therapies.

Friday, June 14 - The Use of Speech Entrainment in Aphasia Rehabilitation
Presented by: Jessica Richardson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, University of South Carolina & H. Isabel Hubbard, M.S., CCC-SLP, University of South Carolina
This course reviews the rationale of using audio-visual speech stimuli to improve speech production in aphasia, focusing specifically on an approach called speech entrainment. Preliminary behavioral and neuroimaging research with healthy controls and persons with nonfluent aphasia will be discussed. Research results suggesting that speech entrainment could be a potential portable and easy-to-use therapeutic tool will be discussed.
