June is National Aphasia Awareness Month

It is estimated that approximately 1 million Americans are living with aphasia, and about 80,000 acquire aphasia each year (https://www.asha.org/research/reports/speech_voice_language/).  Aphasia is more common than Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and Multiple Sclerosis (https://www.aphasia.org/Aphasia Facts/aphasia_faq.html); however, the awareness and understanding of this disorder by the general population is extremely limited.

This is the time of year when our profession encourages all of us to share our knowledge about aphasia, its treatments, and outcomes with those who are unfamiliar.

Clinical research suggests that individuals with aphasia benefit from speech-language pathology treatment and that the quality and quantity of our services influence outcomes (https://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/public/speech/disorders/TESAphasiaFromLeftHemisphereStroke.pdf). Our upcoming virtual conference, Cutting Edge Approaches to Aphasia Management, will present the latest interventions available to improve language abilities and quality of life for this population.  Please join us June 10 -14 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm EDT to learn from the experts in aphasia management:
