I am excited to announce that the 4th Annual Nancy McKinley Lecture Series in partnership with the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire will take place October 7-11, 2013. We continue to honor Nancy McKinley’s legacy throughout this conference focusing on Developing Language in Elementary Students: What’s New? Nancy’s long-time friend and colleague, Linda Schreiber, M.S., CCC-SLP, BRS-CL, will serve as the Guest Editor for this dynamic series.

Daily seminars will provide SLPs opportunities to learn innovative and functional intervention approaches for developing language in elementary students. The one-hour continuing education sessions will be presented at 12:00 PM ET. All courses are offered for ASHA CEUs through SpeechPathology.com and for university credit through the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Additionally, 10% of each new conference registration will be donated to the Nancy McKinley Scholarship Fund.

Course topics from leading experts include:

Monday, October 7: Informational Discourse: Teaching the Main Course of Schooling
Presenter: Carol Westby, Ph.D. CCC-SLP
This course will (1) describe the linguistic differences between conversational and informational discourse; (2) review the development of informational discourse skills in the preschool years; (3) demonstrate how this knowledge can be employed to facilitate development of informational discourse and text comprehension and production in elementary school

Tuesday, October 8: Co-morbidity of (C)APD with AD/HD, Language, and Reading Disorders
Presenter: Donna Geffner, Ph.D., CCC-SLP/A
This course will highlight the various co-morbid conditions typically found in youngsters with Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD), such as reading disorders, language-based learning disorders and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). Prevalence and symptoms will be discussed. Management and various treatment options to improve the child’s academic performance will be explored.

Wednesday, October 9: Contextualized Language Intervention and the Common Core
Presenter: Teresa Ukrainetz, Ph.D., S-LP(C)
Intervention means targeted facilitation so students become better and more independent language learners. Contexualized means doing it in ways that are functional and engaging. Common Core State Standards now set the goal posts for academic success. Common Core provides both intervention targets and learning contexts. This course will introduce ways of working within the Common Core for acquisition and application of skills that matter for school success.

Thursday, October 10: Teaching Social Problem Decision Making to Children and Youth with Social Skill Deficits
Presenter: Kristine Noel, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
This course examines the role of language in social problem solving and social decision making and reviews research related to intervention. A narrative framework for language and social decision making intervention will be introduced. An intervention strategy and related tools for assessing and monitoring progress of narrative, social problem-solving, and social decision-making abilities will be taught.

Friday, October 11: The iPad® and Elementary Students with Language Disorders
Presenter: Angela Sterling-Orth, M.S., CCC-SLP
Take your iPad use to the next level and secure the buy-in from your stakeholders. This course will frame iPad use around critical concepts of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Then, a handful of must-have Apps that maximize UDL when working with elementary children with language disorders will be previewed.
